You know me as the girl who plays with fire,
But this is the song I wrote you in the dark ...
Madness, intellect, audacity?
Grimes, the stage name of Claire Boucher, is an electronic musician and multimedia artist from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. How ordinary and uncontroversial that makes her sound. As any Pophead surely knows by now, Grimes is far from either of those things.
Much of the lore behind Grimes' early career seems well-known by now to her fans: she attend McGill University in Montréal, Québec (a very prestigious school) where she had an interest in neuroscience and worked on her Russian, a language she had first picked up in childhood (she is of French and Ukrainian heritage, and her name means "clear (f.) butcher" in French, a fact she finds hilarious). She chose her stage name after hearing of grime music on her MySpace (which is still around), and listed her music as "grime" despite never having heard grime music before (she ended up liking it, by the way). She also goes by c, the physical constant for the speed of light, because she finds her name hard to pronounce (she has a slight speech impediment, as well as a lisp for the sound /s/, though she doesn't care about the latter).
Grimes learned to use recording software in university (Apple's GarageBand) and about music production from friends, and got involved with the music collective Lab Synthèse, which had a production space in a now-closed warehouse in Montréal and spawned the label Arbutus Records, which has since housed many Canadian indietronica acts. Grimes' first two albums were released on this label: Geidi Primes, a concept album about her favourite novel, the science fiction epic Dune; and Halfaxa, an ambient electronica album that has been described as gothic, both in 2010. Not expecting that anyone would hear her debut (it was first released as a run of 30 cassettes with hand-drawn covers by her), both albums were well-received by critics, to her surprise. All writing and almost all production was done on both by her alone.
Grimes' early work was linked to the "witch house" microgenre, an underground scene of electronic music that was gothic in both sound and aesthetic, and was briefly popular around the early 2010s. (This can be seen on the tracklist of Halfaxa with that scene's trademark use of arcane symbols in their titles.) In 2011, she released the split EP Darkbloom with fellow Canadian electronic musician D'Eon, with the first five tracks being by her. Notably, this EP had her first song to have a music video, the self-directed "Vanessa". Her breakthrough, though, was yet to come.
If you're looking for a dream girl, I'll never be your dream girl
Visions (2012), Grimes' first LP with her new label 4AD, won her widespread acclaim and made her a cultural phenomenon in her home country of Canada. The album gave a more accessible and poppy spin on her early mix of dark, ambient and psychedelic music, and is a bewitching, trance-like album to listen through. Although the first single from it was "Genesis" with a music video featuring Brooke Candy, she won acclaim for her song "Oblivion", written about her own experience with sexual assault and trauma afterward. During this time, Grimes' image became linked with the Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype, the concept of "kawaii" (a Japanese aesthetic which roughly translates as "cuteness") and her waiflike appearance; as well as her reputation as an outspoken feminist.
Grimes has expressed dislike of being misinterpreted as a less serious musician during this time because of her turn towards a pop sound and aesthetic, as well as frustration at not being taken seriously as a woman music producer, still fairly uncommon in electronic music. Indeed the recording of Visions is a key part of Grimes lore: she made the album alone at her home in a matter of weeks, neither sleeping nor eating, and taking amphetamines to stay focused (she has alluded to possibly having ADHD before). [Author's note: Grimes has since disavowed the association of her music with drugs, saying that she has struggled with addiction in the past.]
Her next album came in 2015: the widely acclaimed Art Angels, which saw a turn towards an even poppier sound and moved away from the ambient and psychedelic feel of Visions towards classic synthpop and electronica. Art Angels was recorded again at her home, now in Los Angeles, and showed a mix of strong pop hooks with more intelligible lyrics that touched on themes of personal doubts, lost friendships, and her place in the music industry. [Because this album is most likely her best-known on Popheads, I will not discuss it in much depth].
Infamously, she was quoted in 2019 as calling the album a "piece of crap", a narrative she has refuted since, saying her comments were taken out of context. Despite her success, neither Visions nor Art Angels had any singles that charted highly even in her home country, but she gained a loyal cult following online. To accompany the album, she also released The Acid Reign Chronicles, a series of music videos by her and her best friend HANA).
How could one follow up an album that's been repeatedly called one's magnum opus? It would have to be something crazy, wouldn't it? Something that's provocative ... it gets the people going ...
This is the sound of the end of the world
Does anyone think global warming is a good thing? I love Grimes. I think she's a really interesting artist
We come to it at last: Miss Anthropocene, stylized at release as Miss_Anthrop0cene, Grimes' fifth studio LP and my pick for album of the year.
It’s called Miss_Anthropocene. It’s a concept album about the anthropomorphic Goddess of climate Change: A psychedelic, space-dwelling demon/ beauty-Queen who relishes the end of the world. She’s composed of Ivory and Oil - Grimes via Instagram
?
The way I figure it is that climate change sucks and no one wants to read about it because the only time you hear about it is when you’re getting guilted. I wanted to make climate change fun. Miss Anthropocene has got a Voldemort kind of vibe. She’s naked all the time and she’s made out of ivory and oil. It’s going to be super tight. [...] If I’m stuck being a villain, I want to pursue villainy artistically. If there’s nothing left to lose, that’s actually a really fun idea to me. I think it has freed me artistically. The best part of the movie is the Joker. Everyone loves the villain. Everyone fucking loves Thanos. Let’s make some Thanos art. (Source)
If you haven't heard this album or know anything about it yet, you might be thinking: Wait, what?
Miss Anthropocene is a concept album about the apocalypse. As Grimes said, she wants to make climate change fun. We're living in a new epoch, the Anthropocene, the age of humanity, so named because we now have the power as a species to alter our environment, or even destroy it. Some might find this disturbing. Grimes, however, finds it thrilling.
So my album’s about a modern demonology or a modern pantheon where every song is about a different way to suffer or a different way to die. If you think about it, god-making or god-designing just seems so fun. The idea of making the Goddess of Plastic seems so fun to me. - Grimes
As is common with Grimes: Is she serious? Is she trolling? Being edgy? When the news is full of natural disasters, species extinctions and dire warnings about a climate apocalypse, why would anyone want to make an album about how dying from climate change is awesome? Well, it should be said: Miss Anthropocene is not Grimes. She is a character, a personification of our times, and she is also (this is very key) a villain. This is, as Grimes has done before and shown a long-running interest in, a work of science fiction.
It would be absurd not to talk briefly about how our last year was dominated by the life-altering effects of COVID-19 and how life in quarantine has felt like the apocalypse to many. It's been hard on us, our mental health, our finances. This isn't a "quarantine album", and the album was mostly finished before the virus appeared in the news. Grimes did not predict it, but she ended up making the perfect soundtrack to our dire 2020 anyway and how powerless we felt to do anything about it. "You're gonna get sick, you don't know when", she sings. The threat was always looming whenever we went out, and when we stayed in we had little to do often but doomscroll through news articles about wildfires, protests against police brutality worldwide, a draining election cycle in America, take your pick. Last year was frankly a shitshow no one saw coming - though maybe they should have. Things just aligned right with this album being full of darker lyrical themes, and darker in sound than the bright-sounding Art Angels.
We had a taste of what the album would be like before it came out with the song "Pretty Dark" (video, a demo track released in 2019 that didn't make it onto the album. On this song, Grimes explores alternate characters, being a girl named "Dark", as a chance to escape from her Grimes persona. However, the concept of the album ended up being much more complex, with a whole pantheon of "new gods" that are fitting for our time, each song representing a different facet of the modern world. Here they are as listed on her website months before the album came out:
  1. Goddess of climate crisis: Miss Anthropocene
  2. Demon of addiction: "Delete Forever"
  3. Goddess of ID and social media: War Nymph, her digital avatar
  4. Demon of AI: "We Appreciate Power"
  5. Goddess of gaming: "Violence"
  6. Demon of political apathy: "My Name is Dark"
  7. Goddess of simulation: "4ÆM"
  8. Demon of ego death: "Before the Fever"
  9. Goddess of digital lust: "IDORU"
  10. Demon of sexual assault: "Darkseid"
  11. Goddess of gender roles: "So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth"
Isn't this pretentious? Maybe. But it's optional: you don't need to know all of the album's lore to understand what Grimes is singing about on it. For those who wish to know the background and thought process behind the album in more detail, I highly recommend reading this interview with another uncontroversial Popheads fave, Lana Del Rey first, then delving into her Genius annotations. For now I'm going to give my own, somewhat subjective (!) takes on what each track is about.
Annihilation sounds so dope!
In 2020, Grimes became a mother for the first time with partner Elon Musk, having a child named X Æ A-Xii (the Roman numeral for 12); a breakdown of how they came up with this unusual name can be found here. Grimes and Musk met in 2018 on Twitter, bonding over an obscure philosophical reference (a thought experiment about the dangers of AI called Roko's Basilisk) and made their first public appearance together at the Met Gala that year. Because Musk is (I would argue) an even more controversial figure than Grimes is, I won't be talking about him otherwise, nor do I believe it's relevant to the album. However, this song does touches on her feelings about pregnancy and motherhood, having to (in her words) sacrifice her body to another being.
When Grimes announced her pregnancy in a rather cryptic Instagram post, there was some debate over whether she was pregnant herself at all (remember, she trolled the media in 2019 by claiming to have had an experimental eye surgery which makes zero biological sense). This was cleared up soon, however. On this song, Grimes reflects on being (as the saying goes) heavy with child, bringing new life into a world with an uncertain future. This entrancing song sets the tone for the rest of the album, as does its music video, which begins with a reference to the classic sci-fi film Blade Runner (a movie about rogue androids in Los Angeles that takes place in the far-off year of ... 2019, the year of the song's first release).
This song references the name of a powerful comic book supervillain, as well as Grimes' Playstation user ID, with online gaming being (her words) "where I go to kill people and stuff". The song features lyrics in Mandarin Chinese by Taiwanese rapper 潘PAN (Pan Wei-Ju), also known as Aristophanes, who had a feature on Art Angels' "Scream". A fan translation can be found here. Here Grimes develops upon her fascination with villains and death, while the lyrics by 潘PAN are hard to interpret literally, but paint a vivid picture of death and decay. The opening line feels quite fitting for a year where many of us sat at home all day being anxious (Unrest is in the soul / We don't move our bodies anymore ...) while the operatic backing vocals call to mind religion and medieval themes, another long-running interest of hers. However this is by far the most difficult song for me to connect with its "god" in concept, and I think its original concept was most likely just abandoned.
On this song, released only a couple of weeks before the album itself, Grimes surprised fans with a poignant acoustic ballad with influences from country music - not exactly the kind of genre she is known for doing. Taking the title from a prompt on her computer, Grimes wrote this song about the opioid crisis in North America, being saddened by the death of rapper Lil Peep, who had overdosed on fentanyl (a powerful opioid and dangerous street drug). As well, she touches on her own experiences with drug abuse (I did everything / More lines on a mirror than a sonnet) and being around drug culture in her youth, having lost many friends to drug addiction herself; she compares the experience of feeling euphoric on drugs to the myth of Icarus flying too close to the sun. Grimes describes this song as emotionally hard to perform for her, as is "Oblivion". In the video, she plays a queen overlooking a crumbling empire.
Grimes brings up again her fascination with the history of warfare and weaponry over a club banger, produced by the late i_o (Garrett Lockhart) who sadly died in November of unknown causes. Described as a love song sung between the planet Earth and humanity that portrays a dysfunctional relationship between the two; in describing the concept behind the music video, Grimes also talks about digital violence as a modern addition to the physical violence of the past, which is fitting given its "god" is video games.
The video, filmed in the Vibiana cathedral in Los Angeles, features Grimes surrounded by women wielding swords and dance choreography inspired by Tiktok, with a cameo by HANA as the dead woman on the floor. Though Grimes didn't plan to put this song on the album, and the video was choreographed and filmed in a hurry, nevertheless she was pleased with the results. With its edgy and ironic concept (no, Grimes does not really love violence, nor does the Earth; she does collect swords though), as well as its excellent production, this is my own favourite song on the album.
Written for the long-delayed video game Cyberpunk 2077, in which Grimes plays an NPC named Lizzy Wizzy, this track has Grimes make use of her love of Bollywood films, sampling the soundtrack of the historical drama Bajirao Mastani. Grimes is well-known for her insomnia (see: the recording of Visions above), which is in turn known for its health effects (explaining the lyrics about getting sick). Here Grimes seems to portray being up all night in an ambivalent way. [Having stayed up all night many times, including to write this piece you are reading right now, I can confirm it only feels fun up to a point, after which it becomes exhausting.]
To me this sounds like great music to play in a futuristic city at night - Grimes is a big fan of the cyberpunk genre herself, which tends to feature this setting, as shown by her previous references to Blade Runner and Akira (an influence upon the video of "Delete Forever").
Here Grimes gets into the theme of the album as being inspired by the "gods" - secular replacements for religion - that underlie the concept of the album, the most important being the goddess of climate change (Miss A herself) but including addiction ("Delete Forever"), insomnia ("4Æm"), and more.
I was like, “Well, who are the new gods?” Because we have all this new stuff. We have plastic and pollution and plastic surgery and social media. The new gods sound sick. They sound like … like the Sailor Scouts, like these sick demons. - Grimes
Here Grimes also alludes to her image as gothic, describing herself as wearing "black attire, black eyeliner", fittingly for a bleak-sounding, pessimistic song. Being the slowest track on the album, it may be hard to get into, but it wouldn't be the same without it.
Grimes described her thoughts behind the making of this song in this ... interesting tweet. (I voted for "fighting Balrog", but it seems closer to the latter.) Her "nu metal song about insomnia" ended up being not quite either but does show some of the influence of industrial music on the album; she again brings up drug use, sleeplessness and her alter ego of "Dark" from the single "Pretty Dark".
It’s just about pretty obvious, like, paradise in hell, making the decision to be good or bad. The specter of death always haunting you. It was serious. - Grimes
Grimes depicts herself as jaded and nihilistic (The boys are such a bore / The girls are such a bore / I never trust the government and pray to God for sure, yeah) in the lyrics and alludes to mental illness and self-destructive urges with the opening lines about wishing for annihilation ("When you don’t care if you live or die, when you’re so depressed that you’re like, 'Whatever, fuck it'"). She also hints at her long history of controversies and misconceptions in the media (I'm not shy but I refuse to speak / Because I don't trust you to understand me). Grimes found the song very difficult to make, wanting it to sound "roaring" with its screaming vocals.
In one of her most melancholy-themed songs, here c. sings openly about suicide ideation, conceptualizing it as another demon of hers. She brings up various suicide methods and self-harm, and imagines herself in death as happy. Despite its morbid subject matter, this is a deceptively upbeat song musically. Although self-destruction and death are recurring themes on this theme, this is the one where she talks most about wanting to die herself.
First of all, that title is almost too on the nose for an album released in February 2020.
Here Grimes sings about hedonism in the first verse and uses an old joke as a metaphor for death (There are many ways in / But there's only one way out), referring to birth and death. She explains the title thus:
Grimes explained how she wanted "Before the Fever" to invoke the "literal feelings" of dying — the uncertainty, desperation, and bizarre tranquility presumably felt when one knows it's the end. "Fevers are just kind of scary, but a fever is also sort of poetically imbued with the idea of passion and stuff, too," she told him. "It's like it's a weirdly loaded word — scary, but compelling and beautiful." What's more terrifying and more beautiful than committing yourself to another person when everything could very well implode in your face? One could even call it romantic. (Source)
Even though it was written before the COVID-19 outbreak became serious, nevertheless the theme of this song could easily be called love in the time of coronavirus for the way it combines metaphors of illness with romance (cf. the analysis of "Violence").
By far the happiest-sounding song on the album, this seven-minute epic is also the longest, and much needed after the dark themes that pervade much of it. Beginning with what sounds like birdsong, it's a fun, cute, lighthearted ditty that gives a bit of much-needed hope to the album (I wanna play a beautiful game / Even though we're gonna lose / But I adore you). Maybe we're all going to die and humanity will go extinct; maybe not. If that's going to happen, can't we have some fun anyway?
As an aside, the title is a neat pun on the phrase "I adore you" but also seems to be referencing the novel Idoru ("idols") by famed cyberpunk author William Gibson, in turn about the Japanese concept of "idols", a unique kind of celebrity.
There has been fan speculation over who, if anyone, the song may be about; Grimes alluded to its meaning on a livestream with HANA but did not say in the end. My own take is that it could just as well be about the Earth itself.
These are all ten of the tracks on the standard edition of Miss Anthropocene; on the deluxe version(s) there are five bonus tracks, four of which are alternate mixes of other songs on the standard edition that differ mainly in length ("So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth", "Violence", "My Name is Dark" and "IDORU"). These seem to have been done to make the longer tracks more suitable for playlists, explaining the name "algorithm mix" for them. As well, there is one more: the original WAP.
First of all: what a fucking BANGER.
"We Appreciate Power" is a bonus track that was released as a single in 2018. It was originally meant to feature vocals by Poppy, who had featured Grimes on her own 2018 album Am I a Girl? but after a feud between the two, she was replaced with HANA. Musically, it is influenced heavily by nu-metal, it blends crunchy distorted guitars and loud rock drums with an awesome electronic drop. Grimes' and HANA's vocals trade between verses and choruses and blend so well it is hard to tell which part is whose upon first listen. This song was due to have a larger-budget music video, but ended up getting a bare-bones video instead, which is still a very fun watch with its cyberpunk visuals.
Lyrically, it was inspired by a North Korean girl group who make propaganda music for the state, as well as Grimes' fascination with the concept of an AI dictatorship. "We Appreciate Power" touches on common cyberpunk themes like mind uploading, transhumanism and simulated reality. The song portrays AI rule as something desirable yet frightening, punctuating the lyrics with unsettling shrieks and ending the song with Grimes chanting "Submit" repeatedly. Despite its tongue-in-cheek nature, the song's lyrics led to a minor controversy: for her speculation of AI replacing humans, musicians Zola Jesus and Devon Welsh called her a "silicon fascist" and they got into a spat on Twitter that seems to be resolved, with Grimes acknowledging Zola made some good points. As for the prospect of an AI takeover: it's frankly a terrifying thought, but at least we'd have jams like this.
Now is the time to burn twice as bright and half as long. Sincerely, Miss Anthropocene
This writeup is dedicated to all those cyberpunks who fight against injustice and corruption every day of their lives! (DJ mix)
Thanks so much for letting me do this writeup, Popheads - and thank you if you made it to the end. I know there is a lot here, but Grimes is a longtime favourite artist of mine and I had a lot to say. I hope I've been reasonably balanced here and not come off as an apologist stan; I am well aware Grimes can be "messy" or a "problematic fave". However, I've tried to explain the best I can what this album is really about, give my thoughts, and explain why I think it's one of the albums of the year. As well, if I said anything factually wrong, please let me know; I tried my best to source everything and get things right.

Questions for the culture:

  • [Voice of Anthony Fantano] What did you think of the album? Did you love it? Did you hate it?
  • The album was infamously leaked months before its release. (I didn't listen to the leak.) Did you listen to it or not, and do you think it may have affected fan reception to the album?
  • A big problem with concept albums is that they often have an elaborate concept that doesn't come across well in the lyrics. What do you think of Grimes' concept for this album and did she succeed at it? Do you have different readings of the lyrics than what I wrote?
  • How would you say this album holds up against her others? Was the darker tonal shift a good thing? Would you have liked her to make a more upbeat or poppy album?
  • How would you rank it this among the year's albums? Were they better on average, worse, etc.?
Feel free to ask me any other questions, bring up other topics as you like and I will respond to everyone. (I just have one request though: please for the love of god do not bring up Grimes' partner or child; I think it's messy and like I said, not very relevant to the album anyway.) Any other topic, no matter how "spicy", is fair game though. Just be nice.
Hope reading this was fun! We have more AOTY posts every day for the rest of the month, so be sure to check those out too.

Éliphas Lévis DEVIN arrangement explained: Multiplying fish and latinizing the sacred Tetragrammaton.

The DEVIN arrangement is a formula or procedure that is described in Éliphas Lévis book Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie in chapter "Shin" about divination. I like to think of it as a qabalist riddle or cryptic meme of occult connections. Understanding it, may require some abstract thinking, a bit of pattern recognition and most importantly, a willfulness to misuse qabalah and gematria in illegal and obscure ways. To be honest, it probably also requires an understanding of French, Latin and Hebrew, but I don't have that and I think we can get away understanding it using english translations only.
Since the formula has an exact numerical solution, it seems in a way trivial once you know the result, but there's still a lot of room for interpretation and I'm not sure if or how well known the solution or meaning of this riddle is; if this is already solved and published somewhere else or if there are any different explanations as far as anyone cares.
I kinda stumbled on the solution myself about a year ago, when Frater_Green_Genes/ asked about here it in a now archieved thread, so I just wildely started speculating and calculating and connecting things until they made sense. However, I'm pretty confident, that I do have 'the correct solution' and therefore may be able to present a comprehensible picture of what Lévis point or idea about the DEVIN arrangement was all about, what it most likely meant to him and how I interpret it.

Let's start (unless noted otherwise, all quotes from The Doctrince of Transcendental Magic):
One of the privileges which belong to the initiate of the Great Arcanum, and that which sums them all, is Divination. According to the vulgar comprehension of the term, to divine signifies to conjecture what is unknown, but its true sense is ineffable to the point of sublimity. To divine (divinari) is to exercise divinity. The word divinus, in Latin, signifies something far different from divus, which is equivalent to the man-god.
Not much to comment here. Divus means "saint" in latin. Like an avatar or an incarnation of a god i guess.
Also the word "sum" implies a mathematical operation, but that might not have been intended or may been worded differently in the french original. I'm also thinking "division" just because of all the "div" words.

Devin, in French, contains the four letters of the word DIEU (God), plus the letter N, which corresponds in its form to the Hebrew Aleph, and kabbalistically and hieroglyphically expresses the Great Arcanum, of which the Tarot symbol is the figure of the Juggler.
Let's break it down:
Devin [...] contains the four letters of the word DIEU
This fits because before the letter U was in use, the shape V stood for both the vowel U and for the consonant V. We can treat U and V as interchangable. When we think about U or V in terms of numbers, they're both 6 anyways (hebrew letter Vav).
Since we're composing down to letters here, this is also where we should start thinking about elements and maybe gender. It seems the game here is that we basically just treat the word DIEU as if it were the hebrew Tetragrammaton. In my opinion, it also helps a lot if we visualize the elements in an arrangement with colors, so I'll list them with the elements. Of course, depending on your preference, you can also think about it in terms of any other four-fold thing like cardinal directions, tarot suits, platonic solids, digimon cyber sleuth elements or whatever else you're able to map into four-foldedness somewhat reasonably.
The regular hebrew Tetragrammaton transliterated to latin is:
And for the word DIEU we correspondingly have:

the letter N, which corresponds in its form to the Hebrew ALEPH
This is a shape thing. The letter N does look similar to an א. Ironically some of the PDFs of Dogme et Rituel out there, actually have the letter Aleph from the original replaced with an N because of bad OCR scanning.
and kabbalistically and hieroglyphically expresses the Great Arcanum
The shape of the capital letter N has its right side pointing up and its left side pointing down: "As Above, So Below."
of which the Tarot symbol is the figure of the Juggler.
The Juggler is the Magus. He is posing shaped like the capital letter N (or like an Aleph): Left arm down, right arm up#/media/File:01_Le_Bateleur,_Oswald_Wirth_Tarot_Deck_1889.jpg). Other depictions like the Rider-Waite Magician may also mirror this pose and make his right hand point up.
This is also the case for Lévis version of Baphomet, which in that respect may also be recognized as posing like a mirrored letter N or Aleph: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baphomet#/media/File:Baphomet.png
I think it's also notable that in tarot, the letter Aleph is attributed to The Fool, not to The Magus (=Beth). If you go look up the elementary attributions for The Fool and for The Magus you'll find them both to be air types, but one thing I think they still both have in common, is that they're both somewhat outside of classical elementary attributions.
"He made the letter Alef King in Spirit and bound to it a crown and tested this one with this one, and formed of it: air in the universe" - Sepher Yetzirah
The same idea is also a meme for Baphy. An example of this could be the "black two-headed eagle" who is also a "black triangle", described as dominating the elements in Crowleys Book of Lies, chapter 33 about Baphomet.
Knowing this, we can now abstract the details away and be left with just the idea, that in our current framework, the N is somehow elevated above all other elements in the Tetragrammaton or above the other letters in the name.
This leaves us with a final attribution for the name DEVIN:
This is congruent to the idea of the hebrew letter Shin sometimes representing spirit as being elevated above the four elements in the Tetragrammaton in order to complete or incarnate YHVH into YHShVH.
So both, YH-Sh-VH and DEVI-N being "the name of a saint" or the divine avatar, created by an act of theurgy.

Let's proceed:
Whosoever understands perfectly the absolute numeral value of ALEPH multiplied by N, with the grammatical force of the N final in words which signify SCIENCE, ART or POWER, who subsequently adds the five letters of the word DEVIN [..]
So, now we have to start calculating things. But don't worry, even tough the methods may get obscure, the math it will stay rather simple.
the absolute numeral value of ALEPH multiplied by N, with the grammatical force of the N final
Multiplying letters seems irregular, but it's certainly possible to do so:
Aleph * N * N final = 1 * 14 * 700 = 9800
It's also notable that the letter N (or Nun) means "fish" (compare for example Liber 777).
The Tarot card for Nun is XIV Death. The Thoth card depicts a fish directly and the Rider-Waite card for Death shows a priest with piscine headgear.
The idea of "multiplying fish" is a well established christian meme. Jesus pulls this trick multiple times in the bible: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feeding_the_multitude

in words which signify SCIENCE, ART or POWER
To be honest, I don't know what those three words with the final N actually are. They sort of remind me of Bioshock. Luckily it doesn't really matter what they are exactly, since we already know the value of the final N wich is the only thing that matters of them for the formula. If anyone knows what those words could be, please comment..

who subsequently adds the five letters of the word DEVIN
Here's where it get's interesting. Why should we do that after we did the other barely resonable N multiplications? Whatever, just do it..
So we transliterate the five letters of DEVIN and add them up to 725 like:
And now we add a it all together:
9800 + 725 = 10525
So, 10525. That's it. The solution is 10525.
(Aleph * N * N final) + D + E + V + I + N final = (1 * 14 * 700) + 4 + 5 + 6 + 10 + 700 = 10525

But why and what's the point of this?
[..] in such a way as to make five go into four, four into three, three into two and two into one, such a person, by translating the resultant number into primitive Hebrew characters, will write the occult name of the Great Arcanum, and will possess a word of which the Sacred Tetragram itself is only the equivalent and the image.
I think multiplying letters is already a rather uncommon practice, but now we go fully illegal and apply, what I would call reverse-gematria. Instead of turning a word into a number by adding up it's letters, we do the opposite and force the number 10525 into a word. Normally this wouldn't make any sense and wouldn't be a meaningful practice, since we're limited to the first nine letters of the alphabet only. We also need a trick to handle the 0, since the alphabet doesn't have a zeroeth letter.
We can do this according to comrade Lévis instructions.
Let's start from the right with an empty four-letter word (or number): [_][_][_][_]
make five go into four
We take the fifth digit of 10525 and put it into the 4th place: [_][_][_][5]
four into three
We take the fourth digit of 10525 and put it into at the 3th place: [_][_][2][5]
three into two
We take the third digit of 10525 and put it into the 2nd place: [_][5][2][5]
and two into one
By handling the remaining "10" as if it would be one single digit (e.g. like the "A" in hexadecimal, or like the "X" in roman numerals), we avoid the problem of having handle the 0 as a letter.
We get: [10][5][2][5]
Now we have something that we can convert to letters and translate it back into a word: [Y][H][B][H]
And so we derived a 'latinzed Tetragrammaton' or Tetragram, by adding DEVIN to the multiplication of different fishes: Y.H.B.H.
"A famous Talmudist, Pablo de Sancta Maria of Burgos, converted to Catholicism in 1390, copied the Bible of Nicholas of Lyra adding his own comments to those already existing, including one concerning the pronunciation of the Name. After comments on Exodus 3:14, he indicated that the Tetragram was spelt Y.h.b.h (in Spanish b is pronounced as v), and that this name was very close to the name of Jesus (Y.h.v.‘), because these two names both had 4 letters, the first letter and the third one being the same (y and v)." --The Name of God by Gerard Gertoux

The multiplication of fishes represent an act of Thaumaturgy.
Completing DEVIN from DIEU by adding the transcending N represents an act of Theurgy.

I think Lévis explanation of how the numbers are arranged and evaluated exactly, is mostly just a confirmation of the unusual 'reverse-gematria' method. In a crazy way to which probably no serious qabalist should subscribe to, the sacred name Y.H.B.H. is already there, directly implied by the number 10525.
You may argue the same is true for the original Tetragrammaton and the number 10565. Google also confirms this with some hits for the number 10565 in relation to the word Tetragrammaton.
Interestingly, the sum of the Tetragram Y.H.B.H is 10+5+2+5 = 22.
The hebrew Tetragrammaton Y.H.V.H. is 10+5+6+5 = 26.
Contrarily, the latin alphabet has 26 letters and the hebrew alphabet has 22.
I like to think about difference as the four 'missing' paths implied around Da'ath:

Loveletter Story, Character & Game Mechanic Idea - (SUPER LONG Essay I hope DrApeis reads this)

Loveletter Character and Story Ideas:
This is a continuation of the last post that I have made beforehand. The link to the last post is over here: https://www.reddit.com/lovelettermtf/comments/huhx9f/loveletter_story_concept_project_blood_rose/ .
English:

A lot of people liked my idea that I had for Love-letter's story, so I am currently making a post to write down my full concept for the story. So, in this type of game I am envisioning two types of scenarios. One of those scenarios is a violent, dark thriller story, with Setsuna as a hard yandere, that I am going to call the Blood Rose Scenario (the Blood Rose symbolizes the extreme commitment that Setsuna is willing to make, to the point that she would even commit murder, when it comes to obtaining her Senpai). The other one is a brighter romance, mystery story, where Setsuna is a soft yandere. I am going to call the Raven-hunter Scenario. Now that we know that those two types of stories, I will state that I would work on Blood Rose Scenario and anybody else if they want to can work on the Raven-hunter -both scenarios do have a lot of potential it is just that I am not familiar with romance or slight-comedy.
Now that is out of the way I am now going to define what a "rival" should be. A "rival" should be someone Setsuna believes to quote on quote disturb the tranquility between the relation between Setsuna and Senpai. The difference between my definition and what people usually consider what a rival to be is subtle, but there is still a huge difference in that the rivals do not necessarily have a crush on Senpai and some like the student council president don't even like Senpai at all. Using this definition, the range of rivals can now be larger, from one of the popular kids to members of the city police department, without getting into the problem of pedophilia and can make the story more interesting.
Now all of that is now done, I am now going to discuss what the basic story structure should look like for the game. I didn't plan out what the story structure of the Raven-hunter scenario should look like, but I do know that this should be a pacifist story line for Love-letter, where Setsune is a soft yandere that tries to find out who the other yandere killing the rivals are. The endings of Raven-hunter would depend on how many rivals Setsuna is able to save and also dissuade from liking Senpai, and also on how quickly Setsuna is able to find out who the other yandere is (this is also a puzzle game scenario). For the Blood Rose Scenario, however, I did plan out the entire basic story line. The story should have 2 main story arcs and 1 major minor arc -that needs to be complete to progress the game. I will name the two main story arcs Senpai Love-letter Arc and the Crime, Investigation & Punishment Arc and the major minor story arc, Study of human morality... and demons?.
Senpai Love Letter arc is basically what most of you would expect in this game, eliminating rivals, through either peaceful or violent ways, that Setsuna suspects to be interested in Senpai and also building a good relation with Senpai -this will the only arc that needs to be completed in both Raven-hunter and the Blood Rose Scenario and it's pretty standard stuff. If Setsuna has bad relations with Senpai, he will reject you no matter what you do. The other arc, Crime, Investigation & Punishment arc only exists for the Blood Rose Scenario, and it starts immediately after Setsuna kills or kidnaps a rival. In this arc, Setsuna faces challenges from the school faculty, police department, and the student council who all tries to uncover her crimes. If the Crime, Investigation, & Punishment arc occurs there is going to be a new suspicion meter and if that suspicion meter reaches 100%, Setsuna gets incarcerated -Framing somebody else temporarily will bring the suspicion meter down, but the more times you frame someone, the less effective the method becomes. Now the last arc is the Study of human mortality... and demons? arc. This arc mostly surrounds the occult club and their club leader, and you need to start the arc in the Blood Rose Scenario while it is not necessary in Raven-hunter -I only said start, you can always fail the arc by building up a extremely negative relation with them after finishing the first mission.
These arcs would all have stats and missions that the player needs to care for in the Blood Rose Scenario and also in Raven-Hunter. For instance, the player needs to take care of their relationship with Senpai or else they are going to get a very bad ending at the end. For Crime, Investigation, and Punishment, if the suspicion of Setsuna reaches a 100% it will be a game over and for the last arc you do need to take care of your relationship with the Occult Club and their Leader or you will face a bad ending -and of course the sanity meter still exists. Balancing these stats would be the challenge of this game. This would also allow for the game to be difficult without having to create Mary Sue characters like Raibaru or Megami like what Yandere-dev did and will also make killing every single rival using the same method, in the same time period, while also making the same mistakes every time impossible because of how Bow Chan will quickly rack up suspicion if that is the case. I want this game to be different from Hit-man in ways that are more realistic and also want this game to still be somewhat challenging in easy mode.
Talking about easy mode, now comes the talk of difficulty. There should be about 4 difficulties. The first three difficulties should be Easy, Normal and Hard, pretty standard stuff. Now comes the 4th, most hardest, and the most jokingly named difficulty: Kindaichi mode. For Kindaichi mode, the rules of hard mode would apply, but with addition of the Kindaichi rules which would make the game almost impossible in both the Blood Rose Scenario and Raven-hunter. The rules that apply are the following:
김전일의 법칙:
Kindaichi rules:
Rules that apply in Raven-hunter:
당신이 탐정과 가까운 사람이라도 안심하면 큰일난다. 범인은 누구에게도 자비를 베풀지 않는다.
-(English Translation) Even though you are very close in relation to the detective don't be relieved. The criminal does not show mercy to anybody.
-(English Translation) If you know anything about the criminal's activity then don't tell the police, tell it straight to the detective. If you hide this information you would for the short term be safe, but a lot of people will end up dead and the effect that this will have will be tremendous. However, you might get killed by the criminal for releasing info about their activities.
범인이 까발려졌다고 안심하지 마라. 범인이 수틀리면 그 자리에서 당신을 죽여버리는 수가 있다.
-(English Translation) Don't be relieved if you had found the criminal. The criminal might still be able to kill you on the spot.
정말 당신이 아무 죄도 없고, 무고하다고 해도 일단 탐정이랑 있게 된 순간 아무 이유도 없이 죽을 수도 있다. 그냥 김전일이 보이는 순간 죽을 힘을 다해서 도망가라.
-(English Translation): Even if you didn't commit any crimes or is innocent, staying close to the detective means that you might just die from no apparent reason at all. If you see the detective run as fast as you can.
-(English Translation): If the detective actually visits where you are and if a murder actually occurs then and there, stay close to the Detective at any time. When the Detective goes anywhere, stay by her side and follow her around. Even though people look as if the Detective is some sort of a lunatic don't even bat an eye. Are those looks that you get even comparable to your life? So, for the time stay close to the Detective and if there is a chance to talk to her you must find common interests between you and her and treat her well in order to get a chance of getting closer to her relation wise. Yet, do not be relieved at any time. This method only protects you from getting murdered because you aren't related with the events and you didn't take any actions that would cause for an another person to seek vengeance (such as blatantly flirting with Senpai in front of everybody), which causes the murderer to not even bat an eye on you as you walk together with the detective.
Kindaichi Laws that might apply in Blood Rose Scenario
-(English Translation): If you are the criminal that is targeting to kill someone, if that target is in very close acquaintance with the Detective, stop that plan right away. If you actually managed to kill a close friend or a family member of the Detective will start blaming herself for failing to protect a close friend and will immediately go into serious mode. If the detective then states "in the name of my kin and the dead" you are screwed! (Next thing you know your suspicion meter is going to increase by two to threefold when killing an another person after that). Just give up at this point.
-(English Translation): Lets say you get lucky and manage to frame some one else. Don't be relieved. The Detective might just return home, look through the evidence, get a hint and shout "the mystery is all solved!" and return back. (This event is not going to fire all the time or immediately bust you if it does. So, don't be worried... but it will release the person who was framed and raise the suspicion level on you)
-(English Translation): If you had the bright plan to frame the Detective, do not go through with the plan. The Detective will 100% be proven not guilty, and you will 100% be proven as the criminal. (I mean it is technically possible to frame the Detective in easy mode, but I kind of find this method to be a cheapskate method. It would be impossible to frame the Detective in any other mode, but you won't be busted immediately for it. I mean still the gain of suspicion level is going to hurt a lot :) .)
-(English Translation): Don't just do stuff like suddenly wearing a watch on the right side of your watch (if you usually wore your watch on the left or didn't at all), wear your belt loosely, or even wear your pants loosely. The Detective will highly likely look at you with questioning eyes. Behave like you normally would. You might just get pointed out as being the criminal just because you are wearing a different pair of glasses (You can't just run around, after the body was discovered, in P.E. uniform, a swim suit, or customize the character appearance)
-This Kindaichi mode is just a meme suggestion so it does not have to be taken seriously. This is the only meme suggestion and everything else should be taken seriously-
Basics aside, it is time to talk about the more complex of story writing. While, some people do not find the story of the game to be that big of a deal compared to how the game runs and the mechanics of the game -Like I have not been able to find anyone criticize Yandere Simulator's story line for reasons other than having characters that seem Mary Sue like Raibaru or Megami and also having Ayano and Senpai be monotone characters. I honestly find the story of a game to be one of the most important aspects of the game. Even though the game play is good, if the story is bad, has no characters that amplify the story or sends a very loaded, opinionated, and outright wrong message that leaves false impressions on people on something and some topic, I do not think that that is a good game. This is why I also crap on Fallout 76, the Last of Us 2, and various other games influenced by SJWs and feminists, they either don't have characters that make the story feel more alive or they give a very loaded message when delving with the story. By the way messages do not equal theme, these way that these messages are sent can be broad from impressions that the story give to the main idea of the text.
Before anyone asks, no I am not going to write a critical analysis about the hot piece of crap Alex's story is. His lazy ass does not deserve more attention than it is currently getting, and you know what Alex I and everyone else in the society care jack shit about what you do in your private life. I am not your mother or father, I am not responsible for bailing you out of your financial situation that you have actually caused yourself by not doing anything for the last several years. Do I even want to call you a manipulator in the first place? Nah that would an insult to actual manipulative scammers and politicians who are really skilled at this art, manipulation is an art form and the title of manipulator is not something you deserve at all.
Honestly, I believe that you are just throwing a hissy fit, like a child who does not know how to control themselves. I honestly stopped having random outbursts of anger like when I was in elementary school, several years ago, but you nope even though your like what 32 years old that tantrum of yours never change. You know that you seriously have a problem when a 14 year old teen with lasting anger management issues, to the point that he actually got suspended from school once, states that you have serious problems.
I find your supporters, the critics, and even the developer of Watashi no Mono to be extremely generous and even too lenient towards the bull crap that you pull off. These people for a long time gave you a chance to change your ways and reply back reasonably, and the way you return back that favor is by banning people at about the speed that a machine gun turret shoots. Heck even the developer of the game Watashi no Mono, god bless him he is a saint from what I see from managing to stand people like Yandere Dev, presumably called off the game for you out of guilt and pity.
Is this what you wanted? Does harassing a developer, that even gave credit to you even though they even gave you credit for a game that you didn't participate in making, to the point that he pulls down the game feel good? You have lost the last shreds of moral dignity as I perceive it and I am ashamed to even share the planet with you at this point. Keep in mind I also used to be an avid fan of your game. Your overarching idea for a game was novel and amazing, like amazing enough to hook me into the game development. However, you decided to sloppily, hastily, and lazily compile a trash of a story. This story is an insult to writers and storytellers and it causes me to revolt in anger. Alex you've done goofed
Returning back to the point that I have been talking before, I would now like to talk about what i believe the characters should look like in the game. To do so lets talk about constant and non constant characters in the way I defined for story-writing. A constant character is a character that does not have a major change in character or how they respond. In a way they are one of the most stable character-wise (I am stating character because character does not equal personality, you will get why). A non-constant character then is a character that faces in character. These characters are very unstable action-wise because it is unpredictable what action they would take when they are in different states of environments.
For a story to be good there needs to be an balanced amount of these two types of characters. If the story is made up of entirely of non constant characters then these non-constant characters lose their charm and also makes the individual characters less detailed. If the non constant thing is excessive in a character, the character might show off as an absolutely unrelatable insane guy or make the audience think that they have been shock-baited. On the other hand, if everyone in the story is a constant character, this would be an extremely huge problem as there isn't enough variation in the character's reactions and the characters feel dead not alive. This is a huge problem with Yandere Simulator, all the characters are too constant meaning that they do not feel alive or believable. I mean there are still characters following the trope Kuudere, but you do not make a Kuudere a center-light character.
Kuuderes are supposed to act as foils compared to the main character or some other character. If Kuuderes are the main character, then you make colorful foil companion characters that contrast the monotone main character. You don't just make all the characters a monotone, one dimensional mess, that just makes them feel dead. Now to clarify again, I have nothing against the use of monotone characters in stories. They make great foil that sets up contrasts in terms for characters. However, the problem is that for these characters to be effective they need to be done right and put at the right place, not just lazily spammed all over the place. Think of characters as tools to progress the story, if the right tools are used it can be used to create a good story. However, when used incorrectly the story falls apart, figuratively of course but people would wish for it to be literal.
I think for this game having about 12-15 rivals would be good and adding onto that several other major characters relevant to the story of the game, like Bow Chan’s friend, Info-Chan, members of the police, there should be about 20 major characters. These 20 major characters will lead the plot forward for both the Blood Rose Scenario and Raven-hunter. All the other characters are of less importance, and generally don’t impact the story that much if they are gone. I will now provide a brief summary of the Blood Rose Scenario and also provide greater detail on what the protagonist should look like. (I was trying to put an example dialogue for all the characters I have in mind, but it was taking forever.

Summary of Blood Rose:
Love-struck and falling madly in love with a Senpai that she knows, a paranoid Akimitsu Setsune( ends up murdering one of the fellow students, within the academy. The reason for this is because Hanami’s paranoia and delusions causing her to suspect the girl for “trying to take her senpai away from her” whom Hanami believed was rightfully her’s by birthright. Even though she tried to destroy all the evidence she could, the action was witnessed by Info-Chan, who swooped in to blackmailing Hanami and forcing her to sign a contract of mutual assistance and also caught the suspicion of the police as the girl suddenly went missing for several days. Will Hanami and Info-Chan be able beat back all the suspected-suitors and the police that Hanami from living a peaceful life with senpai or would the Blood Rose that they grew together doom for good?
Characters: Haichi Setsuna (하이치 세츠나) a.k.a Setsuna:
Nicknames in Blood Rose: 死神(Reaper), Raven, Slave, Cherry-Chan
A high-school student by the age of 17, Akimitsu Setsuna is a calm, benign, and kindhearted student who seemingly looks out and cares for her peers from time to time. In actuality, she is very mentally unstable and has no problem killing to "preserve the peace between her and Senpai". She grew up under a single mother, who was constantly abusive towards Setsuna throughout her childhood. Setsuna has a wide variety of tones when it comes to, from being calm and benign to being dry, sarcastic, and rude, and these tones switch between each other depending on the situation. The only constant thing about Setsuna is that no matter what situation it is, she still manages a way to laugh when faced with appalling stupidity.
Dialogue Samples (I might use some of these dialogues later):
Normal:
"That's a secret Senpai. All people have secrets mind you. It is just that those secrets grow larger by time to encompass more people. Someday you will be part of that secret and will share it with me, but that someday can be faster. You are a smart person and if I am assessing correctly will be able to solve this problem with ease. Until you are able to solve the problem, good bye!"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and Senpai-
"Hahaha! You should have seen your face when you realized you got pranked! Normally I would have stayed quiet during these kind of pranks. Yet, this was the dumbest and also the most funniest thing I have ever seen so I couldn't stop laughing!"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and her friend Sayaka-
"To be honest... I don't know what is going on. If I did know what caused the students to drop like flies, I would have told you sooner. I am also afraid... afraid that this lunacy might take away the people I care about. This feeling of fear is a natural feeling that people feel constantly throughout their lifetime. The only way to avoid feeling fear is to cope with it and live on the rest of your life or else you will constantly be in fright to all of mankind's calamities and mishaps."
-Dialogue between Setsuna and Sayaka (basically an example of what deception without lies might look like)
"Had any luck after that? I guess she won't be bothering you anymore, since she is 'too preoccupied'. Hey I mean it is... tough luck for me, but a blessing for you nonetheless. Am I wrong?"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and spoiler-
Agitated/Insane:
"What the fuck do you want?"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and her mother, who is by the time of the story pretty dead-
"No...no..n"
"Oh the irony! I got your little bitch-ass out of that situation, and what you do is bite my hand! I mean you do have a valid point to be honest. In a way you got me right on the point that I am Death-incarnate... hahaha. However, other than that you don't understand me and I don't understand a single bit about your personality. May I call you, sister, for that one because you really are one step ahead of me? Yet, like you realize I don't fucking care at this point, the only person in my head is Senpai, so just let me break your chains and bring you to the place you were always interested."
-Dialogue between Setsuna and spoilers-
"You seriously thought I would follow all of your orders! Who would have expected a joker to act as a wild card within the entire deck? Pff, this is getting me to chuckle into my bones! I can't... I just can't stop laughing...hahahaha! Haha... I do not know who you are, if I did then you would be back in the depths of inferno, and I think you are really smart, but sometimes you still manage to get me to chuckle...hehe"
-Dialogue between Setsuna and Info-Chan (Yeah these two, in my idea, have a very unorthodox relationship because while they are partners, they are partners not because of acquaintance, but out of fear and necessity)
"Really though? If you are not holding anything back, then why haven't you just released the video to everyone in the school at the first sight of dissent? Oh you are such a wimpy snake, a silver-tongued liar that is too afraid to actually enforce their own will by themselves. Is this also why you act anonymously as well? Oh god I am so scared of Lucifer, when in fact I am the Reaper, or its heart, that enforces its wills.
-Dialogue between Setsuna and Info-Chan 2-
This is gonna take forever..so I will just start writing if anybody likes the idea.

Loveletter Character and Story Ideas:

Characters: Akimitsu Setsuna ( 秋光 刹那/아키미츠 세츠나) a.k.a Setsuna:

Literary Destiny: Secondary Weapons!

Hey all!
Between ridiculous amounts of wine and this picture of a Highland Cattle calf, my thesis is in the home stretch. Wish me luck, Guardians, I've five days till it's due!
As per usual, this list is an attempting comprehensiveness, but very likely isn't–let me know of ones you think should be on here in the comments.
Without more ado about nothing, here are the literary references in special weapons!

Sidearms

Dreg's Promise: "I am a marvel with ten thousand arms."
Okay, this might be a stretch, but I think this might possibly be a reference to the Buddhist Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara, who is described as trying to free all sentient beings from the cycle of Saṃsāra–which, you'll recall, is the namesake of the Y2 Warlock armor set–and is often depicted with a staggering number of arms. That particular one can be found somewhere in Leshan, China.
This is more likely a reference to an actual Dreg's promise to himself, from Ghost Fragment: Fallen 2: "I know what no one else knows and now I am a marvel with ten thousand arms".
Thanks to Coincedence and monself for that one!
Anton's Rule: Don't include it unless you intend to use it.
One of the more obvious references, this is talking about Russian writer Anton Chekov. More specifically, and fittingly, the gun is a reference Chekov's Gun, which is a literary and dramatic concept that suggests that there should be nothing in a story that isn't necessary–i.e., if you have a gun in the first act, it must go off at some point during the play. You can't just make 'unfulfilled promises'. Insert obligatory joke about vanilla Destiny's writing here!
Havoc Pigeon: Who knew such a tiny thing could cause so much trouble?
I would assume this is an oblique reference to the Stymphalian Birds, vicious pigeon-sized feathered beasts who, "... are man-eating birds with beaks of bronze, sharp metallic feathers they could launch at their victims, and poisonous dung." They appear most famously in the tale of Hercules' Sixth Labor, where he kills them with arrows dipped in the blood of the Hydra. Awesome stuff!
JabberHäkke-D: Beware, my gun!
One of my all-time favorite sidearms, this is a play on the title of the poem Jabberwocky, by Lewis Carroll. Pair it with The Frumious Cloak and you might just find yourself falling through the looking-glass! Specifically, it 'quotes' this stanza:
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! ...
It's such a delightful little poem, take thirty seconds to read it, if you haven't.
Thanks to TheTakenBing for that one (also, fabulous handle)!
Antandre-D: One of the Twelve lies in your hand.
Get ready for a whole lot of mythology! In the Grecian tradition, "The Twelve" are a group of warriors who accompanied Penthesilea into battle at Troy. Antandre was one of those twelve.
Llefelys-D: You don't have a problem. You have solutions.
This one's for you, Key2087! Llefelys was a Welsh character who became King of France, somehow. However, he remains a an excellent advice-giver to his brother Lludd, and helped him with a whole host of things that were plaguing Lludd's kingdom. Definitely a problem-solver.
Pryderi-D: Long will the poets sing of your deeds.
Another Welsh hero, Pryderi is an iconic part of the Welsh (and greater English) heroic tradition. He was also the only hero to appear in all Four Branches of the Mabinogi. Neat!
Rustam-D: Your labors for the city will not be forgotten.
Rustam–Persian, رُستَم‎‎– is one of the most important heroes in Shahnameh and Iranian mythology. He "... was always represented as the mightiest of Iranian paladins ...".
Thalestris-C: Rule the battlefield with the quick-fire Häkke Thalestris-C.
While the flavor text is pretty generic, the name refers to Thalestris refers to the legendary Amazonian queen, who supposedly brought 300 Amazonian women (and herself) to Alexander the Great, hoping to beget a whole generation as strong and as smart as he was. I mean, who doesn't want to get it on with Alexander the Great?
Vesosis-C: The war is long, but it can't last forever.
Alternately spelled Sesostris (the gun uses Jordanes' spelling, which is not considered standard), he was an Egyptian king who was ridiculously effective at conquering land, even going so far as to lead expeditions up into Europe!
Vortigern-C: Forge your dynasty.
Vortigern was supposedly a 5th century British warlord. His existence is debated, but it's possible he could have been king of the Britons at some point.
Penthesilea-C: Seek out battle wherever it may be.
The leader of the aforementioned Amazonian Twelve, Penthesilea was an Amazonian queen who went to Troy to prove that women could fight as well as men, and for absolution after accidentally killing her sister Hippolyta in a hunting accident. Unfortuantely, Achilles stabs her directly through her breastplate (though it's important to note that one of the reasons Penthesilea was thought to be a better fighter than the rest of the Amazonians is because she had both breasts cut off. ow ow ow) and into the horse beneath. Sir Toby also refers to Maria as 'Penthesilea' in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night:
MARIA Sport royal, I warrant you. I know my physic will work with him. I will plant you two, and let the fool make a third, where he shall find the letter. Observe his construction of it. For this night, to bed, and dream on the event. Farewell. SIR TOBY BELCH Good night, Penthesilea.
Twelfth Night, 3.2.152-6.
Hawkwood-A: Quick on the draw, the Häkke Hawkwood-A is your all-purpose escape plan.
Continuing with Häkke using the names of lesser-known British noblemen for green weapons, this sidearm references John Hawkwood. He is a character surrounded in mystery and intrigue, but is well-known for his clever and brutal battle tactics. I would really guess that the escape in the flavor text is referencing this incident:
Evidence of his craft was seen in his tactics, which included feigned retreats, ambushes, and the use of false information. For example, before fleeing Milanese territory in 1391, Hawkwood accepted his opponent's challenge to meet on the battlefield next morning. However, Hawkwood "picked up camp and quietly escaped through back routes, placing his battle standards and banners high on the trees so that the enemy would assume he was still there. He then detached a contingent of his men and placed them in the woods to entrap the enemy as it pursued [him]."
Sneaky bastard.

Fusion Rifles

Telesto: Vestiges of the Queen's Harbingers yet linger among Saturn's moons.
Per KindGott1344:
Telesto (/tᵻˈlɛstoʊ/ tə-les-toh, Greek: Τελεστώ) is a moon of Saturn. It was discovered by Smith, Reitsema, Larson and Fountain in 1980 from ground-based observations, and was provisionally designated S/1980 S 13. In the following months, several other apparitions were observed: S/1980 S 24, S/1980 S 33, and S/1981 S 1. In 1983 it was officially named after Telesto of Greek mythology. It is also designated as Saturn XIII (13) or Tethys B.
And another entry:
In Greek mythology, Telesto or Telestho (/tᵻˈlɛstoʊ/ Greek: Τελεστώ; English translation: "success") was an Oceanid, one of the 3,000 daughters of Titans Oceanus and Tethys. Hesiod describes her as "wearing a yellow peplos". Telesto was the personification of the divine blessing or success.

Here's the first and second entries! Thanks for that!
77 Wizard: The Exo called Gaunt is famous for his Wizards.
A double reference, and both pretty great! The flavor text is a reference to Ursula K. Le Guin's truly awesome fantasy book, A Wizard of Earthsea, whose opening line is:
The Island of Gont, a single mountain that lifts its peak a mile above the storm-racked Northeast Sea, is a land famous for wizards.
The '77' part is both because Bungie likes 7, but also because there was a sci-fi/fantasy movie released in 1977 called Wizards which is frankly pretty all right.
Also, per adrianmalacoda:
"The Exo called Gaunt" may also be a reference to Harry Potter, specifically the house of Gaunt who are the (magical) ancestors of the bad guy Voldemort.
Thesan FR4: Hasten the dawn with the new Omolon Thesan FR4.
Another one from KindGott1344:
In Etruscan mythology, Thesan was the Etruscan Goddess of the dawn, divination and childbirth (as well as a love-goddess) and was associated with the generation of life. She was identified with the Roman Aurora and Greek Eos.

Here's the link to the full article! Thanks for that.
Panta Rhei: Everything flows.
A reference to Heraclitus' original conception of that idea: ποταμοῖσι τοῖσιν αὐτοῖσιν ἐμβαίνουσιν, ἕτερα καὶ ἕτερα ὕδατα ἐπιρρεῖ, or "Ever-newer waters flow on those who step into the same rivers." You never step in the same river twice. Plato makes reference to it twice in his Cratylus, which I'm going to quote because I've got the book right here:
SOCRATES: ... for anyone who called the being or essence of all things 'essia' would naturally sacrifice to Hestia before all the other gods. On the other hand, those who use the name 'ōsia' seem to agree pretty much with Heraclitus' doctrine that the things that are are all flowing and that nothing stands fast–for the cause and originator of them is then the pusher (ōthoun), and so is well named 'ōsia' ....
Cratylus, 401d. C.D.C. Reeve, translator.
LIGHT/Beware: More light! More light!
A reference to the apocryphal last words of German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: "Mer Licht!", which, surprisingly, means "More light!" in English. Another quote of Goethe is, "Beware of dissipating your powers; strive constantly to concentrate them.", but that seems more like coincidence than anything.
The Trolley Problem: Pull the lever. It's the right thing to do.
A remarkably flippant answer to the thought experiment, the trolley problem, which concerns ethical choices when there are no truly good choices. Bungie are dirty dirty utilitarians, apparently. Essentially, the problem is that there is a train going down a track, and if it is not switched to the alternate track, it will run over five people immobilized on the track. However, if you switch the track, it will run over the one person who is also immobilized on the side track. You have control of the lever that switches the train from one track to the other–do you pull the lever? Before you say, 'of course, no question', here's a short summary of the problems involved, explained clearly by Wikipedia:
A utilitarian view asserts that it is obligatory to steer to the track with one man on it. According to simple utilitarianism, such a decision would be not only permissible, but, morally speaking, the better option (the other option being no action at all).[10] An alternate viewpoint is that since moral wrongs are already in place in the situation, moving to another track constitutes a participation in the moral wrong, making one partially responsible for the death when otherwise no one would be responsible. An opponent of action may also point to the incommensurability of human lives. Under some interpretations of moral obligation, simply being present in this situation and being able to influence its outcome constitutes an obligation to participate. If this is the case, then deciding to do nothing would be considered an immoral act if one values five lives more than one.
And in a delightful case of internet irreverence, the trolley problem has also been subject to memery.
Nox Praeli III: All that is dark is not Darkness.
Per S0rrowS0ng:
This could be a simple variation Shakespeare's "all that glitters is not Gold" which itself comes from Aesop's Non omne quod nitet aurum est Maybe, maybe not. Praeli seems to be meaningless in this case.
That line from Shakespeare is from Measure for Measure, Act 2, Scene 7.
LoTR fans will also recognize a variant of it expressed by Aragorn: "Not all those who wander are lost."
Thanks for that!
Eosphoros FR4: Dawn is within our sights.
Man, not that I'm trying to take a dig at the flavor text writers, but they always seem to use the 'alternate' spelling of names. Like, it's never really wrong, per se, but I'm not totally sure what's with their aversion to using the 'accepted' names. Anyways. This fusion is a reference to–fittingly!–Phosphorus, the the morning star. It is alternately used as an adjective, to describe a god as 'light-bringing', or as a god unto themselves. Just as a minor point, here's what the article has to say about 'Eosphoros':
Another Greek name for the Morning Star is Heosphoros (Greek Ἑωσφόρος Heōsphoros), meaning "Dawn-Bringer". The form Eosphorus is sometimes met in English, as if from Ἠωσφόρος (Ēōsphoros), which is not actually found in Greek literature ...
Emphasis mine. Another additional thing that the original Greek–φωσφόρος–corresponds to the Latin 'Lucifer'. Just something to note.
Silvered Eos FR4: A quick-firing Omolon fusion rifle, earned through glory in the Crucible.
Given that last one, see if you can guess what this one is gonna be! Ēōs is a Titaness, and Goddess of the Dawn.
Solas FR5: This FR5 variant contains a hard-wrapped induction system to optimize its charge.
Okay, bear with me on this one. I think this is a reference to the five solae (often anglicized to solas), which are the five doctrinal premises upon which Western Protestantism is founded. The only reason I guessed this is because of the 'FR5', but this could definitely be reaching for straws.
Helios FR5: Coiled with fieldweave conductors, the Helios FR5 is portable hellfire.
Helios is the Greek personification of the sun. He was occasionally conflated with Apollo, but they are usually kept distinct, as Helios was a Titan, and Apollo an Olympian.

Shotguns

The 4th Horseman: It's not a holdout weapon, it's a pathfinder.
Per goldenboot76:
The 4th Horseman - aka Death. Quite fitting for a gun that used to annihilate anything in its path.
Rides on a pale horse, the harbingers of the apocalypse? I'll grab the relevant biblical quote when I get my hands on my Bible again, but thanks for that!
Thanks to wxyg for the shout-out, it's Revelation 6:7-8 (here taken from the New Revised Standard Version):
7 When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living crea- ture call out, "Come!" [or "Go!"] 8 I looked and there was a pale green horse! Its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed with him; they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword, famine, and pestilence, and by the wild animals of the earth.
Immobius: If you can't move me, I can't be moved.
I really want this to be a reference to Captain America's famous 'tree beside the river of truth' speech from Spider-Man #357, but I'm not 100% sure it is ... judge for yourself!
Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — "No, you move."
The Amazing Spider-Man: Civil War #537. Writing by Michael J. Straczynski.
Strongbow-D: The bloodthirsty Häkke Strongbow-D is a weapon fit for a conqueror.
While both he and his father were known as 'Strongbow', this gun almost certainly refers to Richard de Clare, 2nd Earl of Pembroke, who is famous for leading a Norman invasion into Ireland.
The Comedian: A. A ha. A ha ha ha. A ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
No specific idea, unfortunately. It could be a reference to The Joker, of Batman fame; or to The Comedian of Watchmen fame. As a minor note, the number of 'ha's following each 'A' goes 0, 1, 3, 7. Might be a hint, might be nothing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Occam's Razor: Sometimes the simplest ways are best.
A reference to the problem-solving method of the same name, Occam's razor, put forth by William of Ockham, a 13th century English Friar. Essentially, the principle states that, "Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected". That is to say, the simplest solution should be the first choice. Thus the shotgun.
Invisible Hand M7: Built so light, it sometimes feels like it's not even there.
A phrase used by 18th century Scottish economist Adam Smith, the 'invisible hand' is "... the unintended social benefits of individual actions." At its core, it is the idea "... that individuals' efforts to pursue their own interest may frequently benefit society more than if their actions were directly intending to benefit society."
Cúchulainn-D: You may die, but you will die on your feet, facing your enemies.
One of my absolute favorite shotguns, the Cúchulainn (pronounced cuh-hoo-lynn) takes its name from the quintessential Irish hero of the same name. He is the ultimate bad-ass of Irish mythology, and there's a crap-ton of awesome stories about him. I wish I could find the an actual quote of his death, but for now the Wikipedia summary will have to suffice:
Lugaid has three magical spears made, and it is prophesied that a king will fall by each of them. With the first he kills Cú Chulainn's charioteer Láeg, king of chariot drivers. With the second he kills Cú Chulainn's horse, Liath Macha, king of horses. With the third he hits Cú Chulainn, mortally wounding him. Cú Chulainn ties himself to a standing stone to die on his feet, facing his enemies. This stone is traditionally identified as Clochafarmore, located near Dundalk.[33] Due to his ferocity even when so near death, it is only when a raven lands on his shoulder that his enemies believe he is dead. Lugaid approaches and cuts off his head, but as he does so the "hero-light" burns around Cú Chulainn and his sword falls from his hand and cuts Lugaid's hand off. The light disappears only after his right hand, his sword arm, is cut from his body.
Totally 100% bad-ass.

Sniper Rifles

Zen Meteor: Complete awareness, complete focus. A mind sharpened by diligence to a single deadly point.
Per Glamdring804 (a legendary weapon himself):
Not sure if this counts as a literally reference, but Zen Meteor has the perks "Dynamite" and "With a Laser Beam." As in, the gun is a Killer Queen, guaranteed to blow your mind.
Here's the link to the music video. It's Queen, so ... friggin' awesome.
Thanks for that!
Epitaph 2261: It's seen things you people wouldn't believe. Killed most of them, too.
This is a sad reference to the 'Tears in the rain' monologue from Bladerunner. Famously largely improvised by Rutger Hauer, it is a three-sentence monologue towards the end of the movie. Spoilers for Bladerunner:
As for the 2261, I have a crackpot theory: NGC 2261 is the designation of Hubble's Variable Nebula. More importantly, that Nebula is part of the constellation Monoceros. A 'monoceros' is a, "... creature with the body of a horse, the head of a stag (minus the antlers), the feet of an elephant, and the tail of a wild boar. It has one black horn in the middle of its forehead, which is two cubits in length, and is impossible to capture alive." Thus 'the things you wouldn't believe it's seen, that it's killed'!!
Tao Hua Yuan: One day, the flowers will grow again.
Referring to the 5th century Chinese fable, Tao Hua Yuan describes the, "... chance discovery of an ethereal utopia where the people lead an ideal existence in harmony with nature, unaware of the outside world for centuries."
Uzume RR4: With the Uzume RR4 on your side, the Darkness doesn't stand a chance.
Ame-no-Uzeme-no-Mikoto–Japanese, 天宇受売命, 天鈿女命–is the Shinto Goddess of Dawn, Birth, and Memory. Certainly not bad to have on your side, I suppose. About the same I feel about this sniper.
Tamar-D: With the Häkke Tamar-D, they'll never see you coming.
In one of those instances where I had to chose between several historical/literary characters, I'd guess this is an obscure reference to the Georgian sky goddess. Given that she could control the weather, she could probably prevent people from being aware of you?
A minor point of clarification from adrianmalacoda:
Also, for the Tamar-D, since it's a Häkke it's probably referencing a historical warrior or ruler, and not a goddess (as you've noticed, those are Omolon's thing). Just going by the Wikipedia disambiguation, my best guess would be Tamar of Georgia.
Thanks for that!
EX MACHINA~: Eirene ~If (SIVA) return replicate // else if (!SIVA) run ascension()~
A partial example of the phrase 'deus ex machina', literally, 'god from the machine'. It is used to describe a made-up solution to an otherwise intractable problem in a work of fiction. Seems fitting, no?
Eirene RR4: A new Golden Age is just over the horizon. With the Omolon Eirene RR4, you'll be the first to see it coming.
Named after the Greek Goddess of Peace. She is often depicted holding a torch, so she might be phosphorus, mmm?
Aoife Rua-D: Control the battlefield with the Häkke Aoife Rua-D.
Referring to Aoife 'Red Eva' MacMurrough, she was the wife of Strongbow, mentioned above. She often led soldiers into battle, thus the flavor text. Her name is pronounced 'ee-fuh'–which makes the Anglicization of 'Eva' make a bit more sense.
Deianeira-D: They underestimate you at their own peril.
One of two Greek women, Deianeira either refers to an Amazonian who was killed by Hercules on his quest for the girdle of Hippolyta; or to his wife, who accidentally killed him. Either way, her name is cheerfully translated as 'man destroyer'.
Matuta RR4: Bring forth the dawn.
While I personally love this particular flavor text, Bungie really likes their dawn goddesses, don't they? Matuta was a dawn goddess in the Latin tradition.
Black Trung-D: A long range Häkke firearm, earned through glory in the Crucible.
Referencing the Trưng Sisters–Vietnamese, 徵側 and 徵貳–they are national heroines of Vietnam, who ruled for three years after the first Chinese takeover of Vietnam. Pretty gosh-darn bad-ass.
Silvered Mulan-D: A highly accurate Häkke firearm, earned through glory in the Crucible.
No, this is not referencing the movie ... the movie is actually a (admittedly highly inaccurate) dramatization the life of Hua Mulan, a historical and awesome Chinese warrior. She was originally described in the Ballad of Mulan–Chinese, 木蘭辭.
Painted Sammuramat-C: A highly accurate Häkke sniper rifle, earned through glory in the Crucible.
Again with the alternate spellings, Semiramis was the wife of King Nimrod (it used to mean a legendary hunter, I promise), and apparently she was so renowned that:
Nearly every stupendous work of antiquity by the Euphrates or in Iran seems to have ultimately been ascribed to her, even the Behistun Inscription of Darius.[7] Herodotus ascribes to her the artificial banks that confined the Euphrates[8] and knows her name as borne by a gate of Babylon.[9] Various places in Assyria and throughout Mesopotamia as a whole, Media, Persia, the Levant, Asia Minor, Arabia, and the Caucasus bore the name of Semiramis, but slightly changed, even in the Middle Ages, and an old name of the Armenian city of Van was Shamiramagerd (in Armenian it means created by Semiramis).
Silvered Boudicca-D: A powerful Häkke sniper rifle, earned through glory in the Crucible.
Boudica was an awesome Iceni queen who led a British rebellion against the occupying Romans. She was so successful and vicious that she briefly made then-Emperor Nero consider withdrawing all forces from Britain. Unfortunately, she was eventually defeated by the Romans, and she died shortly thereafter.
Tomyris-E2: "If my rifle gets any smarter I'm afraid I'll fall for her." - Anahera-3, Exo hunter
Talk about weapons that I really, really want with literally no way to get them. Damn, with like ... Ambush/QD/Grenadier? Mmm ... I mean, that's also gotta be one of my favorite flavor texts. Besides me fantasizing about weapons, this delightful rifle references Tomyris of Messagetae, who was a female ruler of an Eastern Asian country in the 6th century. She led her armies in a defense against Cyrus the Great, and eventually defeated his armies and killed him. Sweet. The name of the Exo speaking means 'angel' in Maori.
Amina-E7: In a Guardian's hands, a properly equipped precision rifle can gain uncanny capabilities.
One of the few Vanilla rifles that I have that made it through various purges, the Amina-E7 refers to Amina of Zazzau, who was a Hausa Muslim Warrior Queen. She ruled over territory that is now Northwestern Nigeria in either the 16th or 17th century.
Chandragupta-A: You can't be stopped. You won't be forgotten.
Given the 'A' in its name, I'm going to guess this refers to the first Chandragupta, a Mauryan Indian emperor in the 4th century BCE, who was the first emperor to unite the north and south of India. He instigated huge reforms in civil society and religion, made huge advances in infrastructure, and caused the empire as whole to go through a period of huge prosperity. He also started and maintained contact with the West. He is a huge figure in Indian culture, and with good reason.
Gozen-C: The massive Gozen-C fires a brutally powerful iridium sabot.
So, 'gozen' means either 'young lady' or 'young lord' in Japanese. It can also be used to describe female samurai. That means that there are a couple people that it could be. My best guess is this sniper refers to Lady Hangaku, who was a samurai in the 13th century. She was said to be, "... as fearless as a man, and as beautiful as a flower". It could also be Lady Aya, though I can find less information about her.
Trajan-C: Accurized long-barrel sniper weapon. Often arrives with unusual onboard systems.
After one of the Five Good Emperors, Trajan was the Roman emperor who presided over the largest military expansion in Roman history, and ruled in peace and prosperity. He oversaw large public improvement and social welfare policies that made him both extremely popular and well-regarded. He died of a stroke in 117 CE.
And that about wraps it up!
There were a handful of entries that landed too far on the side of 'historical' or 'idiomatic' that they escaped noticed here, but let me know if you think there are any egregious weapons that were left out.
Thanks for reading, Guardians!
Just a couple minor edits to include links to my posts about armor and primary weapons!
Also, thank you mods for flair-ing this as 'Lore' <3
Trying not to run afoul of the 'too many edits' rule, and it's annoying, anyways, but many thanks to the kind person who gave this post gold. I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
